Not 100, but 10 Things About Me

A common sidebar in many blogs is the “100 Things About Me.” Sometimes details are so self-indulgent you can almost taste the stickiness. While that can be entertaining when reading other blogs, it's just not my style.Few things need to be known about me and I prefer to express even fewer. So I’ll just give you 10 general attributes of my personality that help to color my posts. Keep in mind that these are only generalities.
1) Passionate about everything I hold dear, so you fill in the blanks as you see fit (mental health, my beliefs, writing, photography, art, music). This can make life exciting for those travelling life's roads with me. In the words of Bette Davis, “Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride!” Although this description makes me sound frantic and somewhat out of control; on the contrary, I accomplish all this in a laid back stance. I let life lead the way.
2) Easily bored. Unimpressed by the norm and seeker of the unusual paths in life.
3) Ethically and morally driven with a deep sense of spirituality, however, I’m not fond of structured religion and dogma. I haven't yet found my niche in the religious world, if there is such a place for me at all.
4) I like to laugh. Anyone who can make me laugh I count as my friend, including my therapist. If you’ve got a wry or sophisticated sense of humor, I love you even more! I typically see humor in most things; life sometimes seems to be one gigantic cosmic joke.

5) Compassionate. Hater of injustice, misery, and intolerance; I’m a kind person and am personally injured when witnessing others’ pain.

6) Intellectually curious and always in search of answers. I’m the one at the cocktail party who loves to find out as much as possible about others and am truly interested in what others have to say, but not usually impressed with what most find important. While I’m very intrigued with the whys and hows of the widgets people invent, I’m equally fascinated with the whys and hows of their current positions in life.

7) Vulnerable (not to be confused with gullible). What's the expression? Gentle as a dove and wise as a fox? I’ve been burned too badly in life so I’m a glass is half emptyl kind of girl and prefer to view the best in people. Yet I can be incredibly cynical when presented with certain types of individuals who can’t look me directly in the eye or give me a warm heartfelt handshake or hug when appropriate.

8) Eccentric. I have ways about me.

9) Commitment phobic. Ask me to dinner two weeks from now and chances are pretty substantial that I’ll cancel shortly before the scheduled event. Spontaneity is more what I’m about. Ask me to fly to Alaska in two hours, give me a chance to grab my mosquito spray and I’m on the next flight!

10) Mysterious. Quiet. Pensive. Rarely what people think I am.

So that's me. And you?

Who Are You?

original post Tuesday, August 09, 2005

I have always been interested in people's stories. I'm a writer who is fascinated by psychology. I'm a client to my therapist and psychiatrist. I have learned a thing or two in the process about people. Why do they react the way they do? Whats going on in their minds?

What kind of a person are you?

I have been pursuing my interests, getting published, astronomy, painting, and most of all photography, which has become a fascinating hobby since I've gotten my digital camera.

I've been facing tough times recently. Problems at home as well as feeling like I'm nurturing everyone I know and not getting nurtured in return. I need a little nurturing, too. Just a little bit, not a lot. But some would be nice.

I'm the kind of person who needs to give. I feel compassion. I try to live Kindness. But sometimes I harden up and fall short. I'm just a girl. Can you blame me? But sometimes giving means being taken advantage of, and having to learn to let go.

I'm learning to understand my bewilderment at life. The state I'm in is a result of mistakes made. I can only do what I can to make things right. And that's what I am doing.

I plan to budget my money, maybe even take a budgeting class. I plan to pay my father off for everything I've ever borrowed. I will be published, and my artwork will be displayed. I will happily go to my job, knowing that my work in caregiving will benefit somebody. I'm tired of slacking, as I've been doing it for 33 years. Now is my time to get it together, all of it.

I'm writing this to be held accountable. If you know me, please understand me. I'm only doing the best I can.

The Dog Days and Why

Tuesday, August 09, 2005

I used to love summer. The beach instead of school. Saturdays all week long.

But as an adult, summer isn't so hot. Well, actually it is, and that's the problem. I still love the longer, sunny days, but not the heat and the way it drains your energy. Yesterday I passed out from probably the heat (or something disasterous I don't want to think about).

Most people are familiar with the term "dog days of summer." We're there now, between July and early September when the heat and humidity is doing it's best to sap our will to move, to do more than sit indoors in the AC.

In ancient times, when everyone from astronomers to the average citizen looked to the stars more often than we do now, they drew pictures in the sky by connecting the stars. They saw images such as bears, bulls, crabs, and even some dogs. Like Pleades, the Seven Sisters for example. How the heck did they find that? It so happens that the brightest star in Canis Major, which means "the big dog,"is Sirius. In the summer, Sirus rises and sets with the sun. During late July, our ancestors believed that since Sirus was so bright, the heat added to the heat of the sun, creating the hot weather we call “dog days." After the dog star, of course, and generally speaking, the "dog days" today occur during the period between early July to mid August. The heat of these summer days is not due to the brightness of Sirus, but is due to the tilt of the Earth.

So what it comes down to, is it's too damn hot out.
